A day in the house

Local stone walls stepping down the slope, so every bedroom gets the morning and the terrace keeps the shade at noon.

A house on a hill above the Aegean, where the problem is not too little sun but too much. Every room looks at the sea, and none of them sees the sun after eleven.

Deep terraces, thick walls and a courtyard with a pool keep the house cool without machines. We drew it from the shadows outwards: first the shade each hour throws, then the walls that make it.

  1. Morning light on the terrace

    07:10

The only hour the sun is allowed onto the terrace. Breakfast happens here.

  2. Cool living room in shade

    11:30

Noon. The roof overhang is drawn so the living room floor stays in shade from now until evening.

  3. The lawn and pool in afternoon light

    16:00

The pool takes the heat. Water throws light back up under the eaves, never into the rooms.

  4. The house at dusk

    19:20

The walls give back the warmth of the day. Shutters open and the sea breeze crosses every room.
